President, PM Modi express grief on Tirupati stampede

Tirupati Stampede: On January 8, 2025, a tragic stampede occurred near Vishnu Nivasam in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the loss of six lives and injuries to several others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “Pained by the unfortunate incident of the stampede in the Tirupati temple. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. May the injured recover at the earliest.”

President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her condolences, saying, “Distressed to know that a stampede in Tirupati led to loss of life of many devotees. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for speedy recovery of the injured.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his grief, stating, “Pained by the unfortunate incident of the stampede in the Tirupati temple. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased. May the injured recover at the earliest.”

The stampede occurred during the distribution of ‘darshan’ tokens at the Tirumala Srivari Vaikuntha Dwara, leading to overcrowding near the ticketing counter. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed deep shock over the incident and is closely monitoring the situation. He is scheduled to meet the families of the victims to offer his condolences.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹25 lakh to the families of the deceased. Efforts are underway to provide medical assistance to the injured and to manage the situation at the temple premises.
